In our multi-family communities we are considering installing web cams in our leasing offices so that we can monitor activity and thereby increase the safety of the leasing area, and possibly increase the professionalism of the staff.
Please let me know if you have experience with this, or any other comments/suggestions you may have.
Thanks, Kevin

We have put camera systems in for security - they can be done realtively inexpensively. We have not however used them to monitor the activities of our people. Although we have considered it.
If you can't trust your staff - should they be your staff

The security aspect is clearly a plus.
The ancillary benefit of monitoring staff could be quite important also. Have you ever had an employee steal from you? This can be done in a variety of ways including not working as scheduled. The idea here is, trust and verify.
In theory if you "trusted" your staff you would never have to inspect the property, walk vacant units, review the files etc., but we know these things must be done. The staff also knows we will do these things, so they know what items to keep in order.
If they also knew their offices were being monitored staff might do a better job. I can't be everywhere at once. If I move forward with this item, I will report back.
Thanks, Kevin

Installing the cameras for security and property monitoring is a good idea; I would be careful about any language associated with monitoring employees. The safety and security of staff and the public could be enhance with cameras.

We have been using video cameras and remote backup systems for years. In our state, we are required to post that we are using video monitoring and surveillance. To my knowledge, in some states you may additionally record with sound and others you may not, when properly posted.
Most companies do not have the time and money (staff) to monitor the cameras in "live time". It is more of an "after the fact deterrent. We have caught tenants stealing laundry, pocketbooks, etc. in common area and have provided copies of the incidents on DVD’s to the police.
We generally need a date and an approximate time to screen the saved video. If you have watched more than one camera at regular speed looking for the proverbial "needle in the haystack", it's hard on your eyes. You find yourself not wanting to blink in fear of missing what you are looking for.
Our information is stored locally for two weeks and then archived for later use.

Has anyone used temporary vireo recorders, like a Nanny cam in problem areas?

We utilize cameras for security of staff and residents but we don't use them to monitor staff. A present on-site manager should be able to determine what their staff is doing without use of video cameras. Besides, who has time to watch hours of video footage?

I agree with having Web Cams for Security and mostly for quality control for on-site staff.
