TIAA-CREF: Success with ENERGY STAR

TIAA-CREF, one of the largest institutional real estate investors in the nation, has been an active ENERGY STAR partner since 2002 and has made the ENERGY STAR approach to strategic energy management a cornerstone of its sustainability efforts. In 2007, TIAA-CREF expanded the initiative to its multifamily portfolio, committing to reducing operating costs by managing its residential communities with an eye toward energy efficiency. From 2007 through 2009, TIAA-CREF reduced its communities’ common area energy consumption by more than 9 percent – leading to energy cost savings of about $500,000 each year.
