Six Social Media Trends
Six Social Media Trends for 2010
Source: blogs.harvardbusiness.org
"In 2009 we saw exponential growth of social media. According to Nielsen Online, Twitter alone grew 1,382% year-over-year in February, registering a total of just more than 7 million unique visitors in the US for the month. Meanwhile, Facebook continued to outpace MySpace. So what could social media look like in 2010?"
Some of the near-term trends are:
1. Social media begins to look less social
2. Corporations look to scale
3. Social business becomes serious play
4. Your company will have a social media policy (and it might actually be enforced)
5. Mobile becomes a social media lifeline
6. Sharing no longer means e-mail

In addition to the points mentioned in the article, Marjean's analysis was superb. I am seeing social media overload, when I am flooded with new offers the minute I sign on anywhere. Like everything else in life, there is a tipping point in social media, and somedays I have seen enough.
For me, the primary driving force for utilizing social media has been to increase traffic to my website and allow it to grow on the search engines. This SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the least expensive way to increase your traffic, make your website more dynamic appear to be updated more frequently, and get your site closer to the "front page" on Google, Yahoo, Bing and other search sites. I do agree with being careful with the Social networks. I am chosing a theme and audience for my social networking so as to minimize the tempation to post the latest joke of the day and such!
Excellent article and comments above are all on the mark!! Social media is the wave of the future as long as we are careful how we use it.....
I also agree with the excellent comments listed above. Social Media enables people to connect all over the world with friends, business associates and family. We have to be careful what is posted and what is said because anyone can read or see the photos posted on your sites such as Facebook and MySpace.
This article contains excellent food for thought as social networking is becoming a bigger part of communication style every day. It is important to maintain a level of professionalism, recognizing that once a photo or statement is posted, it is out there in indelible ink which it is difficult, if not impossible to ever totally erase. On the other hand, if used properly, one can reach a multitude of additional contacts, resources, keep track of the activities of friends and colleagues, and develop new business contacts that were not possible through previous communication methods. It behooves one to learn and understand the processes for cutting edge communication and use to one's best advantage.
